What You Can Do: Parents
Whether you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or already have a child with FASD, there are things that you can do as a parent that will make a lifetime's worth of difference to your child.
Be Informed:
Information leads to informed decision-making. Educate yourself on alcohol and pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about your concerns - and don't be afraid to get a second opinion.
Be Bold:
Children don't come with a manual. Being a parent can be challenging - and even more so when your child has FASD. But there are resources you can call on and places you can turn to in your community for help. When you reach out, you'll find there are a lot of people reaching back.
Be Proud:
You want the best for your child, so look for ways to give your child every advantage available. Give your child all the tools, the opportunities and the support needed to reach his or her fullest potential.
Be Aware:
Even though FASD is only caused by drinking during pregnancy, there is still a risk of drinking afterward. Health Canada cites studies that show that if a woman is drinking while breastfeeding, alcohol can be passed along with the breast milk. This can interfere with the production of the milk, resulting in babies eating and sleeping less. The best thing to do is plan to breastfeed when there's no alcohol in your system.
Be a Parent:
The single greatest thing you can do for your child is love that child, absolutely and unconditionally. A parent who is always in your corner, rooting for you, supporting you and caring for you is the most powerful advantage any child can have.
